âMama?â
âHawk?â
âItâs me, mama. Iâm sorry to call you so late, and Iâm sorry I waited so long.â
âItâs okay, love. Please tell me whatâs going on.â Mamaâs voice is gravelly from sleep, which is a good sign. It means that sheâs actually been sleeping.
âMama, itâs a long story, and there isnât a lot of hope at the end of it, but Carson is still alive.â I pause to lick my lips. âIt took them two days to find him after a mistaken identity. Heâs in bad shape, mama. Iâm sitting here looking right at him, but heâs medically asleep, and the doctors donât give much hope for him, mama.â
She doesnât say anything on account of her crying. I hear scuffling and my Luâs voice comes on the other end. âHawk, honey?â
âHi darlinâ. Itâs so good to hear your voice, precious.â
âItâs good to hear from you, too, baby. Iâve been staying with your mama. Sleeping with her and all. We seem to make quite a pair.â
âI knew youâd take good care of her, darlinâ.â I reiterate what I just told mama, and I can hear her settling in the background, while Luellen talks to me.
Then mama comes back on the phone. âI want you to tell me where you are, darlinâ. So at least we can send Carson some flowers or something, to let him know that weâre all thinking about him.â
âSure, mama. Iâm not sure how that works out here, but Iâll leave it to you to figure it out.â
After giving her the information and speaking briefly, I hang up, but not before kissing my brotherâs cheek for mama. I settle in and keep Carsonâs hand in mine, trying like hell toâ¦I donât knowâ¦transmit positive energy. Do whatever I can to help him heal and bring him back. For another day and a half, I sit there, praying, talking to him, hell, I even read a bit to him from a book I had on my phone forever, and I watch doctors and nurses walk in and back out again, giving me no more news, other than weâre still not out of the woods.
I must have fallen asleep, and the door opening awakens me. I think Iâm hallucinating from lack of sleep, until he says hello and I know heâs real. âGrayson. What are yâall doing here?â
He looks at Carson and then at me, and he gives me a little head shake, before taking a step towards me and hugging me like heâs never hugged me before. The lump in my throat comes from nowhere, and I canât swallow it down. âGood to see you, man.â I say, voice cracking.
âMama figured you were about ready to lose it, so I hopped on the next plane. Itâs not right that youâre here alone, man. And nobody else could come out. Kurt and I fought over it some, but Lisaâs just had the baby and all.â
âNo, I get it. I appreciate you coming.â I say, wiping my eyes. Heâs got a lone duffel
